Pupillage
Third-six pupillages
Chambers currently has work for at least six working pupils each year. As a result, in addition to the work done by the three twelve-month pupils, there is space at any time for at least three third-six pupils. Recruitment tends to take place in July and August for positions starting in October - and in February or March for positions starting in April.
Vacancies for third-six pupillages are advertised according to the work available within the various practice groups in chambers and applications can then be made in writing to the Pupillage Committee. The interview process is likely to involve discussion of an ethical problem as well as a written exercise.
Successful candidates will then be allocated a Pupil Supervisor. In addition to whatever work they may bring from their previous chambers, third-six pupils can expect to be in court at least five times a week. Their likely workload will include RTA arbitrations and possession hearings, as well as some family and immigration work. They will also be encouraged to do written work for other members of chambers, who will later form part of a panel reporting to the Pupillage Committee.
All third-six pupils are encouraged to apply for tenancies at the end of their pupillages (although they can apply to have their applications considered earlier in certain circumstances). Applications for tenancy are decided by the Recruitment Committee, based on reports from pupil supervisors, panel members and the clerks' room as well as a written exercise and interview.
All third-six pupils are given a copy of the Chambers' Pupillage Handbook, which includes details of how and when to apply for a tenancy as well as a grievance procedure specific to pupils.
All enquiries about pupillage should be addressed to the Pupillage Committee (whose present chair is John Buck) - either by post or e-mail to jbuck@tanfieldchambers.co.uk.
