Our approach to pupillage
Tanfield adopts a pro-active and involved approach to pupillage, taking on 2 or 3 pupils every year with a view to eventual tenancy. Our policy is only to recruit those we consider to be potential future tenants: it is unusual for us to recruit junior tenants who haven't completed at least six months' pupillage in chambers.
When selecting candidates, academic strength is important (candidates will usually have a first class honours degree or good 2:1), but we are also keen to take on pupils who will make a positive contribution to the atmosphere and development of the chambers. Tanfield is a firm believer in Equal opportunities and we consider all applications for pupillage, tenancy or administrative positions on merit - regardless of age, sex, race, beliefs or physical ability.
In addition to twelve-month pupillages, we usually look to recruit an additional number of third-six pupils. We also have an active programme of mini-pupillage during vacation periods, encouraging those with an interest in chambers - or those contemplating a career at the bar - to gain experience in an informal way.
