Professor Surya P. Subedi

Areas of Practice

The areas of his expertise include international investment disputes and arbitration, international land and maritime boundary disputes, international trade law (mainly WTO law), public international law, international watercourses law, Hindu Law and Nepalese law. He has published widely in these areas and advised various governments and public utility companies on international legal matters.

Practice Profile

His name has been included by the WTO in the Roster of Panellists of the Dispute Settlement Body. He was formerly a Consultant on international legal matters to Mishcon de Reya Solicitors in London. He has worked in Nepal as an Under-Secretary in the Ministry of Law & Justice, as a Legal Officer in the Office of the Attorney-General and as a legal adviser to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Lectures

He is Professor of International Law at the University of Leeds and Affiliated Professor of International Law and Development at the Institute of Social Studies in The Hague, the Netherlands. He is a Crown representative on the Governing Board of SOAS, University of London. He has taught law as a visiting professor at the World Maritime University in Sweden and Brooklyn Law School in New York.

Writing

He has published five books and a large number of articles in almost all leading international law journals. His latest book entitled, ‘International Investment Law: Policy and Principles’, is being published by Hart Publishing, Oxford. He also has published articles in national and international newspapers including the International Herald Tribune, and given interviews on several occasions to BBC Television and Radio (including BBC World Service and Radio 4), CNN International, Sky TV, Al-Jazeera TV, and ABC Radio Australia.

Her Majesty the Queen of the UK appointed him an OBE - Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire - in 2004 for his services to international law and Britain-Nepal relations. He was also decorated by His late Majesty King Birendra of Nepal by the Order of Suprabal Gorkha Daxinbahu for his services to law in 1998.

He speaks Nepali, Hindi, and Urdu.
