Practice Profile
Mathew specialises in the provision of strategic counsel on political, policy or public affairs matters during international, European or national legal or regulatory proceedings.
Throughout his career Mathew has advised parties involved in some of the most high profile European merger and anti-trust cases (see below). This includes assisting parties to prepare merger clearance strategies or to undertake dawn raids preparedness. Mathew also provides public affairs and strategic advice on litigation before national and European courts in competition, commercial and human rights cases.
He has advised corporate client in sectors ranging from information technology and communications, fast moving consumer goods, energy and utilities, transport, financial services, pharmaceuticals, industrial chemicals and raw materials.
In 2004 Mathew was voted amongst the top 10 European public affairs competition advisers by Global Competition Review. He is bilingual in English and French and has a good command of German and Spanish.
Principal Cases
Merger cases include Airtours/First Choice, Telia/Telenor, WorldCom/Sprint, Dow/UCC, EMI/Time Warner, CVRD/Mitsui/Caemi, Hewlett Packard/Compaq, Carnival/P&O, Oracle/PeopleSoft, Oracle/Siebel, Verizon/MCI and Seagate/Maxtor. Anti-trust cases include EU investigations into Qualcomm, the Mobile Roaming Charges investigation, Coca Cola, IMS Health, as well as investigations into the telecommunications, airline and printer cartridges sectors. Cartel cases include the Vitamins Cartel and Bitumen Cartel.
The principal cases before national and European courts in a competition context include Wouters v. Nova, IMS Health v. Commission and Airtours v. Commission. Litigation in commercial matters includes international patent and copyright litigation, cases in the luxury goods sector, the Prestige Oil Spill Casualty and the Concorde Crash litigation, as well as human rights cases involving corporations.
Lectures
Mathew speaks regularly on various aspects of the European fundamental rights, competition policy and EU non-judicial remedies, including CPD accredited seminars. He has been involved in training programmes for international law firms, as well as for the European Commission's Directorate General for Competition and Competition Enforcement Officials of the EU's New Member States.
He has spoken at a range of venues such as the Centre for Global Competition, the European Policy Centre, the UK Human Rights Lawyers' Association and the European Citizens Advice Service. He also took part in the Annual Bar Council Conference 2003 Workshop entitled "Influencing the Course of EU Legislation".
Writing
Mathew has published numerous articles on EU competition and anti-trust practice and process in publications such as the European Competition Law Review, Competition Law Journal, Global Counsel and Journal of Public Affairs, amongst others. He comments regularly on European matters in the international press and is Special Correspondent for Public Affairs for Global Competition Review.
