Chambers UK 2008
Tanfield Chambers continues to strengthen its position in Chambers UK 2008, with members of Chambers being recommended as leaders in their field across 3 separate specialist areas.
Chambers had 7 members recommended in Property Litigation, with the editors commenting: “This set is “making a serious mark on the property sector,” determined as it is to involve its barristers in increasingly high-profile cases. Philip Rainey is regarded as “an absolute genius” by both peers and instructing solicitors, many of whom "wouldn’t use anyone else for leasehold enfranchisement cases.” A regular presence at the Leasehold Valuation Tribunal means that he is as well acquainted with the latest decisions of that body as anybody at the Bar. “A good property barrister and a fantastic courtroom operator,” Michael Buckpitt is armed to counter the most prolific of efforts from opposing counsel. His recent work includes acting in connection with the forfeiture of a flat valued at more than £1 million. James Fieldsend is a junior closely linked to housing issues, working closely with RSLs, institutional landlords and local authorities. Christopher Heather is “an able fellow” with an assortment of property litigation cases under his belt. Increasingly, it would appear his caseload is leaning toward leasehold enfranchisement, though he is more than capable of handling real property as well. The same could be said of Andrew Butler, a commercial lawyer with a significant vein of property work running through his practice. Mark Loveday is an expert on commercial property disputes, with the majority of his cases 1954 Act-related, while Tim Polli was marked out as “a man on his way up.””
Stephen Monkcom continues to be recognised as a leader in Licensing. He is “considered by contemporaries to be an “absolute authority on the law” with an “academic and unassuming” presence in the market. He advises a variety of clients drawn from the television, newspaper and Internet media sectors on betting and gaming applications and business opportunities available under the Gambling Act. His scope within licensing extends to liquor and entertainment too, and he is editor-in-chief of a leading industry handbook.”
David Holloway is a newcomer to the rankings and is recommended for his work in International Arbitration: General Commercial & Insurance. The directory states that “he is particularly experienced in oil and shipping work, and clients laud his “ability to translate complex ideas into layman’s terms,” along with his “relaxing manner.”"
The Legal 500 2007
Tanfield Chambers has been recommended once again in this year’s Legal 500, with members of Chambers being recommended as leaders in their field across 5 separate specialist areas.
Chambers moved up the rankings in Real Property, with the editors commenting: “Tanfield Chambers has pushed ahead this year, with excellent clerks and a strong range of property juniors, and achieves promotion for the way the set is picking up work, and is increasingly well regarded for Tribunal work. Enfranchisement expert, Philip Rainey ‘brings a very clinical and analytical approach to the work coupled with the ability to present even the most esoteric point, in a manner which is clear and understandable’ and Michael Buckpitt who is ‘the Daniel Craig of property law – bright, articulate, tough’. Nicholas Isaac is seen as ‘prompt in his responses and practical in his advice – just what, I as an in-house solicitor, require i.e. targeted advice with a practical slant’. Christopher Heather is extremely calm and competent in everything that he deals with, ‘and is also very good with clients – a gentle approach rather than arrogant’. Ellodie Gibbons is assertive, but also ‘easy to approach and she is very good on her feet’”.
Instructing solicitors comment that Gerald Wilson “never lets you down” and recommend him for civil partnership issues.
Stephen Monkcom gets consistently recognised for his expertise in Licensing and leads the way as a Leading Junior. “Stephen Monkcom is the ‘leading authority at the Bar on gambling law’ and ‘his knowledge on betting, gaming and lotteries is one of the strongest’. He is currently advising a client on a premises licence appeal”.
Kerstin Boyd is noted as a Leading Junior in Personal Injury.
David Berkley QC is recommended for Commercial Litigation and described as a “user-friendly silk who has a mind for the detail and an eye to the commercial outcome”.
