12-month pupillage for 2014-15

The recruitment process for pupillage for 2014-2015 has begun. Please download the following three files if you are considering making an application:

-
Pupillage application form
-
Notes
-
Diversity monitoring questionnaire

Please note that the deadline for the submission of applications has been extended to 4pm on Friday 5th April 2013.

The reason for this extension is that, due to an administrative error at the Bar Council, Tanfield's pupillage application process for 2014-2015 was not advertised online.

Please note the following: the application form provides space for applicants to provide details and commentary of no more than three examples each of legal and non-legal work experience. Chambers expects applicants to evaluate for themselves which three examples are the most relevant to their application. Applicants should not add any additional boxes to the form and should not comment on more than three examples. In the event that this guideline is disregarded, the Pupillage Committee will only have regard to the first three examples given and all others will be disregard. Failure to follow this instruction is a relevant factor which the Pupillage Committee may take into account when assessing an application.

For all issues relating to pupillage at Tanfield Chambers please email pupillage@tanfieldchambers.co.uk.

Pupillage at Tanfield

Tanfield Chambers adopts a pro-active and involved approach to pupillage, taking on up to two twelve-month pupils every year with a view to eventual tenancy. Our policy is only to recruit those we consider to be potential future tenants: it is unusual for us to recruit junior tenants who have not completed at six months’ pupillage in Chambers.

Structure of pupillage

Pupillage at Tanfield is divided into three periods of four months each with different pupil supervisors. The aim is to introduce pupils to each of the core practice areas in chambers, giving them experience of court work and the opportunity to work with as many members of chambers as possible. During their second six months, pupils can expect to be in court regularly. Their work will consist mainly of small claims trials: an ideal environment for 'cutting your teeth' in advocacy. Other likely work will include possession claims, fast track trials, tribunal work, and interim applications. Chambers offers up to two 12–month pupillages. The current level of award for each pupil is £30,000.00, inclusive of £15,000.00 guaranteed earnings during the second six months.

Third-six pupillages and mini-pupillages

In addition to twelve-month pupillages, we usually look to recruit an additional number of third-six pupils. We also have an active programme of mini-pupillage during vacation periods, encouraging those with an interest in chambers - or those contemplating a career at the Bar - to gain experience in an informal way.

Tenancy

We are always looking for high-calibre practitioners to join one of our practice groups.

At Tanfield, barristers have the opportunity to build their practice in a friendly, dynamic and team-focused environment. Chambers is open to flexible working and has a generous Parental Leave policy. Chambers also offers the chance to share ownership of the freehold building from which we practise and a rent structure which reflects its out-of-Inn location.

Please send applications to Gerald Wilson Chair of the Recruitment Committee. All applications will be treated in strictest confidence.

Equal opportunities

Tanfield Chambers is a firm believer in equal opportunities and we consider all applications for pupillage, tenancy or administrative positions on merit - regardless of age, sex, sexual orientation, race, beliefs or disability.

Applications for tenancy, which will be treated with the strictest of confidence, should be made in writing to:
