Tanfield Chambers’ Business and Commercial Group boasts a wide range of commercial litigation expertise, from heavy Commercial Court trials down to satisfactory quality disputes in the County Court. We are instructed by leading City solicitors, foreign law firms, regional and national firms, as well as in-house lawyers.

The head of the group is Andrew Butler.

Our members are equally adept at dealing with all types of arbitration and mediation, and have considerable experience as counsel and team leaders in international and domestic arbitrations.  A number of members of the Group are accredited mediators and arbitrators and regularly act as such.

Whatever the level of complexity, our members always strive to understand the commercial considerations underlying the legal issues and to provide an appropriate response.  We pride ourselves on teamwork, forward planning, and up to date knowledge of practice and the law. We also offer expert advice in the early stages of drafting all types of business and commercial contracts, especially for choice of law and choice of jurisdiction clauses, so as to avoid or minimise later difficulties if a dispute arises.

Commercial disputes often require urgent advanced preparation and pre-action applications to the court. This is where Tanfield's strength in depth really comes into its own. Not only can our specialist clerks quickly and accurately identify the right barrister for the complexity and subject-matter of the brief, but where necessary in more substantial matters can select and assemble a team of barristers to deal expeditiously with all the issues arising - each looking after a particular aspect of the case and all working as a cohesive unit.

In these circumstances we can also draw on the considerable expertise of our International Dispute Resolution Group, with whom we work closely.  We will work at our professional colleagues’ premises or client premises as necessary, to provide a timely and focussed service.
