Profile
Between 2001 and 2009 Nic practised from Chambers, primarily in the fields of Business & Commercial Law (including International Dispute Resolution), and Employment Law. Before that, he worked in the Commercial Group at the Treasury Solicitor. He dealt with cases that involved matters of political sensitivity, public interest and legal importance. Nic acted for a wide-range of clients including government departments, publicly-listed companies, insurers, the NHS, banks, building societies, local authorities, and sports agencies. Nic is a CEDR accredited mediator.
Nic now practises commercial litigation at Wilson Harle in Auckland, New Zealand.

Employment
Nic’s experience in employment law includes dismissals, discrimination (all types), Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations, restrictive covenants, redundancy, and breach of contract. He has lectured and written articles on various areas of employment law.
Commercial
Nic’s experience in general commercial work includes contractual disputes of all kinds, tort and fiduciary duty claims, emergency injunctions to restrain breaches of contract, and partnership disputes.
Personal Injury
Nic’s experience in PI work is predominantly in representing Claimants. He has experience of a wide variety of claims. He also has experience in Health and Safety at work claims, and claims for psychiatric injury and stress-related illness caused by harassment, discrimination and bullying at work.
While studying for the Bar, Nic was the secretary of the Free Representation Unit (a charity providing legal advice, case preparation and advocacy in issues such as employment, social security and immigration).
Significant Cases
Nic has recently been involved in:
- "Sadare v London Borough of Lambeth (UKEAT/0116/09/MAA) [2009] ALL ER (D) 30 (AUG) - it was necessary for the purpose of s.32 of the Employment Act 2002 that a grievance should allege breaches of legal rights arising under the discrimination legislation, and that the legal character of the claim being raised should be at least ascertainable, even if the complainant has raised a complaint about the selfsame acts";
- Saminaden v Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust (UKEAT/0018/08/DM) - the application of Roberts v West Coast Trains and Hogg v Dover College to a dismissal/ambiguous resignation (UKEAT/0018/08/DM);
- Emergency injunctions (representing sports management firms/recruitment agencies);
- A High Court partnership dispute;
- A High Court commercial dispute between a well-known manufacturer and its largest client;
- Advisory work for a well-known football agent;
- Advice and representation for a number of NHS trusts/local authorities in employment disputes;
- A PI claim valued at more than £300,000.
